Forgotten Sea: End Notes

I shouldn’t have decided that we needed to translate this before the Rafayel branch story dropped.

I really shouldn’t have made this decision three days before the branch story dropped. There went all my sleep as I typed frantically. Thank goodness for the Chinese wiki and their transcription, as well as Bombie and ayanemimi’s help getting the English lines in. You guys, ILU, thank you for pitching in to help with this self-imposed deadline and crunch.

During the beta, subtextually and I shouted at each other multiple times over Discord as she tried to figure out my approach to translation and a lot of the time she thought I was flip-flopping, especially when she tried to localize the Tome of the Sea God excerpts and I threw a fit at her for it. So, for the benefit of anyone else who is as (deleted word here)--ahem, I mean, as detail-oriented and meticulous as subtextually is, here are my principles when translating:

  • When it comes to religious text/quotations, I lean towards foreignization (I hate that term but whatever).

  • When it comes to speech, I will think about the personality of the person.

  • When it comes to narrative prose, then overall tone is considered, but I'd go with pragmatism over semantics as long as meaning is preserved.
