Snow's Embrace: Chapter 3
MC: He really was too much that time, don’t you agree?
My thoughts returned to the present. I watch Little Bai Ze play in the water as I talk to it.
MC: Though even now, it’s not like he’s grown any gentler.
Afterwards, Zayne tacitly allowed me to remain, and truly did teach me how to control my spiritual energy.
Though, even after spending such a long time together, I still don’t really understand him.
MC: Right, don’t you Bai Ze know everything?
MC: Then, do you know what Zayne is thinking about right now? Or rather, what does he like, what does he want?
MC: I said I wasn’t going to waste his time teaching me. I want to reciprocate somehow. Only then will my heart be at ease.
MC: …what are you glaring at me for?
I’m being glared at by Little Bai Ze for no reason. Turning my gaze behind me, not far away, the flower tree is in radiant full bloom.
MC: (Oh, right, he’s always cared a lot about this tree. Why don’t I help him care for it a bit?)
I recall there is a in the heart of the mountain. Recently while I was taking care of the flower tree, I actually found the egg of a beneath the tree.
It’s said that spirit snakes can protect divine trees and all kinds of grass, so I keep it by my side and let Big Hua incubate it.
But when the time finally arrives for it to hatch, the little snake slithers out from the fragments, and , it fiercely bites my fingertip.
MC: Ow… why so fierce, huh?
The newborn spirit snake wraps around my finger. For some unknown reason, after biting down, it greedily refuses to let go.
Less than a moment later, it suddenly falls to the ground. Its body unexpectedly swells to in length, and its bloody maw gapes open as it erupts into a frenzy.
MC: Not good—
I hastily rush before the Divine Tree, and using what Zayne had taught me, raise a barrier.
After seeing that even the crown of the tree has been completely enveloped, I turn around to deal with the approaching large snake.
MC: Still dare to act arrogant? I didn’t endure all that in vain!
Now I use spiritual energy as easily as lifting an arm or a finger. While fighting, I can even spare some power to send away the birds and beasts that haven’t already fled.
Very quickly, I strike the deranged monster snake’s weak spot, but before I have a chance to rejoice, I see Big Hua burst out from a corner.
MC: Big Hua!
The big snake’s spent tail comes towards Big Hua’s head, but it seems I won’t make it in time—
Zayne: Stand back.
Cold ice suddenly freezes the giant snake. An expanse of white covers my vision, and I’m instantly enveloped by clean, cold qi.
A crisp, sharp shattering sound rings out. I poke my head out from behind his sleeve. The giant snake has already disintegrated into fine dust.
Zayne: What happened?
I lift my head and look up at Zayne’s profile.
MC: I found a spirit snake and originally wanted to let it help nurture the tree, but as soon as it broke through its shell, there was something wrong with it.
Big Hua lets out a loud sneeze, lowers her head and sniffs all around the surrounding area once, then listlessly ambles over to rub against my hand.
MC: It… The snake egg was incubated by Big Hua… She’s probably a little sad…
MC: But, don’t you worry, I protected the tree and the surrounding area very well—
I turn my head to look. The table under the tree that Zayne often sits at has already been overturned. Countless bamboo slips lie strewn in a chaotic heap.
MC: ….ah.
MC: I’m sorry! I’ll definitely help you clean this up!
I know far too well how important these bamboo slips are to Zayne. In an instant, all my turns into
Zayne: Are you hurt?
I draw back my fingertips.
MC: No.
Zayne: Even so, go rest for a bit. I’ll handle things here.
MC: But this happened because of me. I really can’t just ignore it. Besides, I’m free anyway…
Zayne: Your Big Hua follows you because of your power. Just now, that snake went into a frenzy for the same reason.
Zayne: The same cause bore a . So, this is unrelated to you.
Zayne: Rather than blaming yourself, why not take care of that injury on your fingertip first?
There is no way to hide anything in front of Zayne, so I can only sigh and leave.
Never mind helping him—not being misunderstood by him is enough to make me thank Heaven and Earth.
After an indeterminate time passes, the mountain recovers its serene silence.
I curl up motionlessly on the couch, listening to the bells on the curtain ringing softly, the sound of rustling outside.
MC: Little Bai, you don’t need to worry… I’ll be fine after being upset for a little bit…
The surroundings fall silent for a moment, but before long, the bells ring again—and something also pats me.
MC: I’m really fine—just don’t bother me!
The movement outside pauses briefly, then shifts position and resumes patting me. I squeeze my eyes shut even tighter in exasperation.
Zayne: Where do you feel discomfort?
Zayne: You have plenty of spiritual energy, you haven’t sustained any injuries. Then…
Zayne: Is it simply that you in your sleep?
Zayne: Come.
Kindled
Zayne: Ridiculous.
Zayne: Don’t move, there are a few strands of hair wrapped around my hand.
Zayne: Even your hair has your temperament. It looks soft, but once it , it’s hard to untangle.
Zayne: Since you’re up, go and clean up the aftermath.
Zayne: I’ll wait beneath the tree for you.
Zayne: You don’t need to feel depressed. The Divine Tree is fine, and I’m also not blaming you.
MC: But I haven’t slept enough yet…
Zayne: When did you learn to laze about in bed?
Zayne: I don’t need to care for you? Then, I will take my leave.
Zayne: Mm?
Zayne: Recalling your power so suddenly… aren’t you afraid of hurting yourself with the backlash?
MC: Isn’t it because of you…?!
Zayne: Fine, it’s because of me. I shouldn’t have tried to compete in a show of strength with someone who is hiding under the covers and .
Zayne: However…
Zayne: A moment ago, didn’t you say you were going to help me? Hiding here and sleeping—it turns out you’re planning to dodge your debt.
Zayne: Since you’re up, go and clean up the aftermath.
MC: He was very impolite back then, don’t you think?
My thoughts return to the present. I watch Bai playing in the stream as I talk.
MC: But he’s still not being very kind.
After that day, Zayne allowed me to stay here and taught me how to control my spiritual power.
However, I have yet to truly understand him even after we spent a lot of time together.
MC: Oh, isn’t your kind supposed to know everything?
MC: Do you know what Zayne is thinking about? Or what he likes? What does he want?
MC: I did say I wouldn’t learn from him for free. I have to repay him somehow. Otherwise, it wont sit still with me.
MC: …Why are you staring at me like that?
I’m puzzled by Bai’s gaze. I look behind me and see a blooming tree not far away.
MC: (Ah, yes. He always cherishes that tree. Maybe I should take care of it for him.)
There seems to be a spiritual vein in this mountain. While taking care of the tree, I found a Viper egg under its roots.
Mistranslation Alert: It's a spirit snake, not a viper. Spirit snakes have spiritual power and can become animal familiars/companions to cultivators.
It’s said a Viper can protect all plants and trees. I kept the egg with me and let Hua incubate it.
But when the egg hatched, the little Viper slithered out and bit my finger.
MC: Ouch… You’re so aggressive!
The newborn Viper coils around my finger. And for some reason, it refuses to let go.
It falls to the ground only to suddenly grow ten zhang long. In a frenzy, it opens its huge maw.
MC: This is bad…!
I quickly rush to the front of the Sacred Tree. Remembering Zayne’s lessons, I set up a barrier.
When the tree canopy is completely covered, I turn my attention back to the approaching Viper.
MC: You’re bold! But I didn’t suffer through all that training for nothing!
Using my power is as effortless as moving my fingers now. Even in a fight, I can spare some energy to send away the birds and animals that haven’t already fled.
I quickly strike the Viper’s vital point. But before I can celebrate, I see Hua running out.
MC: Hua!
The Viper’s tail is about to slam down on him, but I won’t make it in time–
Zayne: Step back.
All of a sudden, ice freezes the Viper. White fills my vision, and I’m enveloped in a refreshing yet cold breath.
At the sound of something shattering, I peek out from behind the sleeve that covers my eyes. The Viper has turned into dust.
Zayne: What happened?
I look at Zayne’s profile.
MC: I found a Viper egg and wanted it to help protect the tree once it hatched. But something was wrong as soon as it came out of the egg.
Hua loudly sneezes, sniffs the ground, then walks over to nuzzle my hand.
MC: Hua hatched the egg… She might have been upset…
MC: It’s okay. I protected the Sacred Tree and the surrounding–
I look back. Under the tree, the table where Zayne often sits is overturned along with the chairs. Countless bamboo slips are scattered on the ground.
MC: …Oh.
MC: I’m sorry. I’ll clean it up!
I know very well how important these bamboo slips are to Zayne. My confidence turns into unease.
Zayne: Are you hurt?
I hide my finger.
MC: No.
Zayne: Rest. I’ll take care of everything else here.
MC: But it’s my fault this happened. I should do something at least. It’s not like I have anything else to do…
Zayne: Hua follows you because of your power. It’s also why the Viper went mad earlier.
Zayne: The same beginning can yield different outcomes. It has nothing to do with you.
Zayne: Instead of blaming yourself, you should tend to your injured finger.
I can’t hide anything from Zayne. Without much of a choice, I sigh and leave.
At this point, even if I can’t help him, I’m already grateful he didn’t misunderstand me.
After a while, the mountain has returned to its usual tranquility.
I stay still on the daybed, listening to the faint jingling of bells on the curtain and the rustling outside.
MC: Don’t worry, Bai… I’ll feel better soon…
There’s a moment of silence, but not long after, the bells jingle again. Something taps me.
MC: I swear I’m fine. Leave me alone!
The noise pauses for a moment, then something taps me again. I shut my eyes in resignation.
Zayne: You planned to dawdle in bed?
Zayne: Would you like me to leave you alone? All right then.
Zayne: Hmm?
Zayne: What happened?
Zayne: Your spiritual power is strong. Since you’re not injured…
Zayne: Are you unable to sleep well?
Zayne: Come.
Zayne: Don’t sulk. The Sacred Tree is unharmed. I’m not blaming you either.
Zayne: You planned to dawdle in bed?
Zayne: Would you like me to leave you alone? All right then.
Zayne: Hmm?
Zayne: You’ll get hurt if you let go so abruptly.
MC: It’s because of you that…!
Zayne: All right, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t argue with someone who’s sulking.
Zayne: However…
Zayne: Didn’t you say you were going to help me earlier? But now you’re hiding and sleeping. I see.
Zayne: Now that you’re up and about, help me clean up the mess.
Zayne: I’ll wait for you under the tree.
